What is it?

Basketball is the most popular indoor sport in Israel. Almost every town has a court, almost every school has a team, and Israeli children grow up watching the country's club teams play across Europe. The biggest club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, has won the top European trophy six times - more than most clubs from much bigger countries.

Basketball came to Israel in the 1930s and grew quickly. The country is hot and sunny, but a basketball court doesn't need a big patch of grass. You just need a flat surface, a hoop and a ball. That made it easy to play almost anywhere - school playgrounds, kibbutz farms, town squares.

The national league is called Ligat HaAl. The most famous club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, plays in a yellow and blue strip and is supported by fans across the whole country. Their EuroLeague matches are watched on TV by millions.

Players from Israel have also played in the NBA - the top basketball league in the world, based in America. Omri Casspi was the first Israeli to play in the NBA. He became a hero back home, and lots of children started playing because they wanted to be like him.

Schools and community clubs run basketball training for kids from about six years old. There are mini-leagues, big tournaments, and summer camps. Many parks have outdoor hoops where children play after school. It is the country's most everyday sport.
