What is it?

Football is huge in Argentina. Argentina has won the men's football World Cup three times - in 1978, 1986 and 2022. Their most famous player, Lionel Messi, was born in a city called Rosario and is one of the greatest footballers ever to play the game.

Argentine children grow up playing football almost everywhere - on streets, in school playgrounds, on patches of grass and on indoor courts. Every neighbourhood has its own little club. The country has produced a long, long line of brilliant players, partly because so many children play so much from such a young age.

The 2022 World Cup final, in which Argentina played France, is still talked about as one of the most exciting football matches ever. It went to extra time, then to penalty kicks. When the last penalty went in, the whole of Argentina celebrated for days.

Lionel Messi has won more individual football awards than any other player in history. He is small (just 1.7 metres tall) and very fast. He is also famously quiet off the pitch. Many footballers say he doesn't shout, he just plays.

Argentine fans are known for being some of the loudest in the world. At big matches, the stadium sings and chants for the whole 90 minutes. Argentine teams have their own songs that fans have been singing for generations.
