Olympic weightlifting has two big lifts: the 'snatch' (where the lifter heaves the bar straight overhead in one move) and the 'clean and jerk' (where they bring it up to their shoulders, pause, then push it up). Both look impossible until you see them done by someone who has trained for years.
Albania's most famous weightlifter is Briken Calja, who reached the very top of his sport and competed at multiple Olympic Games. Coaches in Albania say the country has a small but very strong tradition of training young lifters carefully, from primary school age, focusing on technique long before any heavy lifting.
Strength sports were big in Albania during the 20th century, and a lot of training halls and clubs have been around for decades. Today, alongside weightlifting, Albanian athletes compete strongly in wrestling, boxing and judo too.
Watching a weightlifter is one of the most exciting things in sport. There's silence as they walk up to the bar. They take a breath. They squat down. And then - in less than a second - they explode upward and the barbell is over their head. The whole hall claps at once.
