If you could walk Somalia's entire coastline without stopping, it would take you nearly a month! The shore changes as you travel - white sandy beaches near Mogadishu, rocky coves in the north, and beautiful coral reefs under the water that are home to thousands of fish, turtles and rays.
The Indian Ocean along Somalia's coast is warm all year round, which means coral grows well there. Coral reefs are like underwater cities - they look like colourful rock but are actually made from tiny living creatures called coral polyps. Fish of every colour dart in and out looking for food.
Fishermen have sailed these waters for thousands of years. Traditional Somali fishing boats called 'sambuk' are hand-built from wood and have beautiful carved patterns on them. Families pass the skill of boat-building from parent to child, just as their grandparents did before them.
