What is it?

High on Mount Titano there is a small ancient chapel connected to the story of San Marino's very first community. It is said to be one of the oldest surviving structures in the country. The chapel is a quiet and beautiful place where you can feel the great age of the mountain all around you.

Tell me more

San Marino was founded in the year 301 CE - which is an incredibly long time ago. The story goes that a stonemason named Marinus came to Mount Titano with a small group of friends and started a community there. Over a very long time, that tiny community grew into what is now one of the world's oldest republics.

The chapel on the mountain is linked to that founding story and is considered one of the most historic spots in the whole country. Its stone walls are thick and the building is simple - nothing flashy, just solid craftsmanship that has lasted for many centuries.

Visiting the chapel gives you a sense of how long people have been living on this mountain. San Marino's people are very proud of their long and peaceful history, and the chapel is one of the places that reminds everyone just how far back that history goes.
