Hong Kong's 200+ Islands

Beaches, fishing villages and hiking trails, a ferry ride from the city

What is it?

When people think of Hong Kong, they often picture tall, shiny skyscrapers. But Hong Kong is also made up of more than 200 islands, many of them green, quiet and wild, just a short boat trip from the busy city.

Tell me more

The biggest island is called Lantau. It has forests, mountains, sandy beaches and even a giant bronze statue of the Buddha sitting on a hilltop, reached by a long, swinging cable-car ride.

Some islands have no cars at all. On Cheung Chau and Lamma, people walk or cycle everywhere, and fishing boats bob in the harbours. You can eat freshly caught seafood and watch the boats come in, just as families have for generations.

Many of the smaller islands are almost empty of people, places where you can hike, swim, and even spot pink dolphins in the sea. So Hong Kong has two faces: a city of towers, and a string of peaceful islands right next door.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Hong Kong has a busy city and quiet islands close together. What do you like about busy places, and what about quiet ones?
  2. 02On some islands there are no cars. How would life be different without any cars where you live?
  3. 03Why might it be special to protect wild, green places right next to a big city?

Classroom activity

Plan an island day trip. On a map of imaginary islands, draw a ferry route from a city to three islands. At each one, draw one thing to do (a beach, a hike, a seafood lunch). Tell a partner which island you would visit first and why.
