What is it?

The Mediterranean monk seal is one of the rarest marine mammals on Earth. A small population rests and pups in sea caves along the Atlantic coast near Western Sahara - making this stretch of coastline one of the most important places in the world for this gentle creature's survival.

Tell me more

Monk seals are large, smooth, dark grey animals that can reach 2.5 metres in length - about as long as a small car. They have big, soulful eyes and flat, paddle-shaped flippers that make them superb swimmers but rather clumsy on land. They spend much of their time at sea catching fish and octopus, then return to quiet caves to rest.

The caves along this coastline are special because they have sandy beaches inside, hidden from waves and human disturbance. Mother seals give birth inside these caves, and the pups are kept safe there for the first weeks of life. The caves can only be entered by swimming underwater through a narrow entrance - which keeps out most predators.

Scientists use cameras and underwater microphones to monitor the seals without disturbing them. Every pup born here is good news for the species. The monk seal is called 'monk' because, like a monk, it tends to live alone or in very small groups rather than in big noisy colonies like most other seals.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01The monk seal hides its pups in sea caves. What other animals use hidden or underground spaces to protect their young?
  2. 02Scientists use cameras instead of visiting the caves in person. Why might disturbing a rare animal's home be harmful even if people mean well?
  3. 03If only a few hundred monk seals are left in the world, why does every single pup matter so much?

Classroom activity

Create a 'rare animal fact file' for the Mediterranean monk seal. Include: where it lives, what it eats, how big it is, why it is rare, and one thing people can do to help protect it. Design a logo for a pretend 'Save the Monk Seal' campaign.
