The biggest park in Chișinău is called Valea Morilor - which means Valley of the Mills - and it has a large lake at its centre. Families come here to walk, cycle, row boats and sit under the shade of enormous willows and poplars. In autumn the lake reflects the golden and red leaves of the surrounding trees, making it look like a painting.
Chișinău is built on gentle hills, which means many of the parks have lovely views across the city's rooftops and green treetops. The central park, called Ștefan cel Mare, has broad paths, flower beds shaped into patterns, and a huge fountain at its heart. On hot summer days the fountain is surrounded by people cooling off in the spray.
Linden trees are especially loved in Chișinău. In June they blossom with tiny yellow-white flowers that fill the whole city with a sweet, gentle scent. People collect the blossoms to make a soothing tea called 'tei'. Walking down a linden-lined street in June is one of the most memorable things about a visit to the city.
Because so much of the city is tree-covered, Chișinău is noticeably cooler in summer than cities with fewer trees. The trees absorb rain, provide shade and give birds a place to nest right in the middle of an urban area. Sparrows, starlings and even green woodpeckers live in the city parks alongside the people.
