What is it?

Every year on the 6th of August, Jamaica celebrates Independence Day - the anniversary of becoming its own independent nation in 1962. It is the biggest national holiday of the year, filled with parades, performances, music, fireworks, and proud displays of Jamaica's black, green, and gold flag.

Tell me more

The Jamaican flag is the only national flag in the world with no red, white, or blue in it. Its colours each carry a meaning: black stands for the strength and creativity of the Jamaican people, gold for the sunshine and natural wealth of the island, and green for hope and the lush farmland.

Independence Day celebrations begin at midnight the night before with a Grand Gala - a huge outdoor ceremony in Kingston's National Stadium featuring traditional songs, dance, costumes, and performances from artists across Jamaica. It is televised across the island and watched by millions.

During the day, communities across Jamaica hold their own celebrations. Schools put on performances, streets are decorated in black, gold, and green, and families gather for meals together. Jerk chicken, festival, and rum cake are popular foods at Independence Day gatherings.

The national motto of Jamaica is 'Out of Many, One People' - a phrase that celebrates the many different cultures and backgrounds that have come together to make Jamaican society. Independence Day is a time when Jamaicans reflect on that diversity and feel pride in everything that makes their island unique.
